Plot Summary
Based on Mordechai Richler's Giller Prize winning bestseller of the same name, the politically incorrect life of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) is told through his romantic entanglements. After his first wife leaves him, Barney maries a second time, and then meets yet another woman, who turns out to be the love of his life.
With his father Izzy (Dustin Hoffman) as his sidekick, Barney takes us through four decades of his life as a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking hockey fanatic and TV producer, as he reflects on his successes and numerous failures.
Paul Giamatti won a Golden Globe for his performance. The film won seven Genie Awards and was nominated for an Oscar.
"The impeccably cast confessional, with a pitch-perfect Paul Giamatti leading the way, nimbly traverses the four decades in its lead character's eventful life with considerable exuberance, visual flair and, ultimately, grace." - Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter
