EMPz 4 LIFE (2006)
113 min. Rating: 14A
DIRECTOR: Allan King
6/10 REEL Student Rating (3 votes)

Plot Summary

Renowned documentarian Allan King focuses his lens on the prejudice, hope and despair swirling around four young men from Toronto’s Malvern area. The teens — Christopher (aka C-Jewlz), Jordan, Sadiki and Jivon — have a mentor in Brian Henry, who has had some run-ins with the law but now tirelessly volunteers his time and energy to ensure that others don’t go down the same path. Displaying his trademark assured, cinéma-vérité style, EMPz 4 Life (EMPz is slang for Empringham, the area of Malvern where the boys are from) is a challenging and thought-provoking work from a master filmmaker at the top of his game. King’s meditative approach offers no easy answers or solutions to the issues — without narration or interview, King allows his subjects’ actions to reveal the complexity of their world.

Screenings of this film are dedicated to the memory of Keyon Campbell (1991 – 2007).

About The Director
Allan King

Allan King is one of Canada’s most accomplished directors and cinema pioneers. In the late-60s, King made Warrendale and A Married Couple, whose fly-on-the-wall atmosphere established him as a master of the ultra-realistic style just becoming known as cinéma vérité. Having made more than 60 films over a career spanning almost 50 years, Allan King died on June 15, 2009. He remains one of the giants of Canadian cinema.

@ chatae: i think the purpose of this page is just to show you a little bit of the mofie and not show you the whole thing, if the whole movie was on the site there'd be no point in the film festival itself

The great thing about this film is its originality. Many students can relate to the struggles the students went through in this film. This film was like a wake up call because the message that I (as well as others) got was "Hey! If you set your mind on something, then you can really do it if you try." Even when students fail, they get right back up and try again. It goes to show that it's never too late to change! :)
