Set during the height of the First World War, Passchendaele tells the story of an important event in Canadian history through the eyes of Sergeant Michael Dunne (Paul Gross), a soldier who is wounded in France and returns to Calgary emotionally and physically scarred. While recovering back on Canadian soil, Dunne meets a beautiful nurse, Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), and becomes determined to win her heart. When Sarah’s young asthmatic brother, David (Joe Dinicol) enlists to fight in the war, Michael returns to the battlefield to protect him. The two men are sent to fight against impossible odds in the battle of Passchendaele, which has since become synonymous with the misery of WWI’s muddy, rain-soaked trenches.
A film about passion, courage, dedication and love, Passchendaele shows us the enormous price Canadians paid during the Great War. The film was nominated for numerous awards and won six Genies, including Best Picture and Best Actor, for Paul Gross.
