Plot Summary
Long Tack Sam was a brilliant Chinese magician and acrobat, celebrated in the international vaudeville circuit during the first half of the 20th century. His great granddaughter Ann Marie Fleming, an awardwinning Canadian filmmaker, became intrigued by Long Tack Sam and decided to find out about him. Sam had been a celebrity, hobnobbing with Laurel and Hardy, Jack Benny and many other famous comics and vaudevillians. Famously, he taught magic tricks to Orson Welles, the legendary fi lmmaker. Yet very few records of Sam’s career survived. Fleming spent years interviewing family members, searching archives and using animation techniques to recreate magic acts in an astonishingly successful attempt to bring back Sam’s spirit and artistry. “Fleming - who is of mixed Chinese- Caucasian background - has always demonstrated a fascination both with the illusionary properties of filmmaking and the complications of race.“—Geoff Pevere, Toronto Star
